This is a virtual event examining the Chinese economic and business dynamic from a historical perspective as well as insights into the current state of affairs. Importantly, the discussion will focus on effective ways for the business community to address risk from China.

Speaker: David Stapleton

Mr. Stapleton began his career on Wall Street at JPMorgan, where he rose from analyst to vice president in just over three and a half years, unprecedented in the firm’s history. He led Market Strategy and developed the firm’s proprietary sequential optimization methodology for providing ideal asset class and fund allocations to Fortune 500 companies. During this time, he guest-lectured on the Economics of Finance at Columbia University.

Following 9-11, he departed Wall Street for the U.S. Marine Corps, and served overseas in Afghanistan, Iraq, Colombia, Peru, and Nigeria. He was appointed as a nonpolitical Senior Advisor in counterterrorism at the US Department of State and then served as Chief Operating Officer and as a member of the Board of Directors for two tech start-ups.

Since 2016, he has served as a member of the Senior Executive Service within the US Department of Defense, where he served as the Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Industrial Policy, DoD Director of Committee on Foreign Investment in the US (CFIUS), Director of Trusted Capital, and Assistant Director for Critical Technology Protection. He has also served as an adjunct instructor in Political Science and Economics at the U.S. Naval Academy, guest-lecturer in African Affairs at the U.S. Air Force Academy and guest-lectured on Geo-economics at the Harvard Kennedy School program for Senior Executives in National Security. He remains in the reserves and is currently serving on active duty.
