Our next Strategic Conversation will be on Tuesday, 16 January. This event will feature three alumni along with a current faculty member providing insights into Russia, Putin, and the Russia/Ukraine conflict.
Following the event, we invite you to join us at Teddy’s for our first Alumni Day! We hope to offer this opportunity every month with our Monthly Strategy Conversations. Teddy’s will be open 4-7pm.
Speakers
Ambassador John Beyrle was a Distinguished Graduate of the War College in 1996 before taking up his post as Ambassador from 2008-2012, a fascinating time as the west saw Putin menacing Georgia and Ukraine in a preview of recent actions. John is now retired but served multiple tours in Moscow and has been involved with Russian issues since he departed Moscow.
Dr. William Hill was a Foreign Service Officer with the distinction of having studied at a program with one Vladimir Putin in the early 1970s. Bill has extensive experience in the states bordering Russia and remains keenly involved in Ukraine events. He retired from National in 2017, following a decade of teaching at the NWC.
Dr. Mariya Omelicheva currently teaches at National where she arrived in the summer of 2018. A Russian native, her work focuses on Russia’s activities in foreign policy, particularly in Central Asia. Mariya brings us current connections to Russians because of her superb and prolific scholarship.
COL Rob Timm retired from the Army in 2015 following a career as a Foreign Area Officer focusing on Russia. Rob taught at the College for several years prior to his retirement, including during 2014 when Putin seized the Crimea and deployed his ‘little green men’ strategy in Ukraine to presage the current conflict. Rob remains extraordinarily aware of the on-the-ground challenges of this conflict so no one can speak to it quite as knowledgeably as Rob.
When/Where: Tuesday, January 16, 2024 at 4:00pm in Arnold Auditorium. The lecture will be an hour, and Teddy’s will be open until 7:00pm.
